Service Learning Reflection

The Three Levels of Reflection

The Mirror

This year for Service Learning my group was the Fundred Dollar Bill. Through my experience doing this we didn’t do anything really. I have more empathy for volunteer because it made me feel more sorry for the people in New Orleans. Nothing really alters my values or sense of community. It never challenged my prejudice because I don’t have any.

The Microscope

If I were in charge of the Fundred Dollar Bill I would have been more on top of things because we didn’t accomplish anything. I found out the man that started the Fundred Dollar bills was an artist. I feel we didn’t have any success in the Fundred Dollar Bill. We needed to go to Ballard Sphar to show is power point about Fundred Dollar Bill to get the green printing paper.

The Binoculars

Our three biggest issues that create problems that our service is trying to address are no one really cares, not enough people want to help, and we need more input. I can’t really change anything by myself because you need a BIG group to make a difference. I think the Fundred Dollar Bill should be nation because we need everyone’s’ input.

My Grade for Myself

Listening-3
I kept my attention towards the program the full period and I can remember most of what I learned.
Attendence-4
I was there all of the days of service learning and on time for all events.
Reflection-3
I think I was late to one service learning.
Participation-3
I was mostly on task and was always respectful of others.
Preparation-3
I had research and other material ready for some of the meetings. I research, and post other materials on my blog.

Service Learning

On Wednesday when we had the double period and we discuss a lot. First we discuss what we were going to have on our Powerpoint for Ballard. We thought that we should show the pictures that Mrs. Klose had taken while she was in New Orleans. We cleaned up her room for independent hours.

But this week we should be able to go to Ballard and do an presentation on why they should donate printing paper.

Of Mice of Men Symbols

There are symbols just about every where you go. On bathrooms, restaurants, schools, and even books.
Just like in the book "Mice and Men". The symbols in the book are not seen visually like most symbols. They are things ,or places that represent as a symbol of meaning. Three symbols in "Mice and Men", that I recognized is the Farm, Lenny's puppy, and Candy's dog.

Now, Everyone has a dream that they wish to come true. In "Mice and Men", Lennie, George, and Candy had a dream to own their own farm one day. The dream farm is a symbol. Its a symbol of peace, and, success. To have their own farm meant that they would not have to deal with anyone else but them selves. They would be at peace in there own little harmony. Success would come from the ideal of being on their own. Being able to work for themselves, and not anybody else.

The next symbol I recognized is Lenny's puppy. In the book the character Lenny favors puppies. When he learns that his co-workers dog gave birth to puppies, he immediately wanted one. Now, Lennie is a very strong, but mentally challenged. So, he has a record of not being careful with little fragile things: mice and puppies. Fortunately, for Lennie he was given a second chance and received a puppy. This Puppy is a symbol of hope, and opportunity. Lennie now has the chance to have a puppy for a long time with out harming it. Lennie now has the opportunity and hope to prove that he can have something with out destroying it.

Also, I recognized that another pet in the book "Mice and Men" is a symbol. Old man Candy's dog is a symbol. The dog is old, and helpless. He looked as if he was going to fall out and die any minute. The men that knew Candy and his dog, figured that they should take the dog out of his misery. Candy being old his self, hesitated about this. But, eventually considered it. Candy's dog represents death and, the sadness of being useless. Because, since the dog was useless they killed him.

After I finished reading "Mice and Men", I learned that there not just symbols in bathrooms, restaurants, and school, but also in books. Books do not have visual symbols, but things or places that represent as a symbol with meaning. Three symbols that i recognized where the Farm that represent peace, and success. Lenny's puppy, which represents hope, and opportunity, and Candy's dog represent death, and uselessness. Now, that I have this knowledge I will look for symbols like these in every book I read.

Motifs of Mice Of Men

A motif of, Of Mice and Men is the feel of loneliness and the need for companionship from a few of the characters in this book. The characters that has this feeling the most is Curly’s wife, George, and Candy, who all, first start out with a companion but is soon found in loneliness.

Even though she is married to Curly, Curly’s wife is lonely. Curly is very cruel to her and is always out fighting to prove his manhood, so she is very lonely. Curly is always telling her to back into the house and then leaving her alone for hours.

While Curly'ss wife is lonely, Candy is also lonely. Candy once had a dog who was his companion but, then the men decided that the dogwas too old. So, they shot Candy's dog. After the dog was shot Candy became reclusive and therefore became lonely.

George is another character who is lonely. George traveled everywhere with Lennie, even Lennie says, " George and I go everywhere together." But at the end of the book George shots Lennie, so sadly George is then left alone.

In, conclusion there were a lot of motifs in the story "Of Mice and Men". But the chararcter that has this feeling the most is Curly's Wife, George, and Candy.

Service Learning (Past)

I felt fustrated that the lately we haven't been getting nothing done. I also don'tb think getting the people to donate thing to us becuase weren't going to get done. But after the weeks went by I now feel that we are making progress. Through Service Learning I learnded that the victims of hurican Katrina still haven't recovered and now are living under the highways this experience makes me want to do more for people that lose there houses and everyhting the have. Through Service Learning I have learned that you have to help out others because one this might happen to you and you would want all the help you can get, this project made me open my eyes to the world.

Service Learning (Past)

Yesterday I finished up the Powerpoint and Ms. Klose has approve it. We had called a few people to see if they had any information to where we could get used oil, printing, and the green paper.

Service learning (Past)

On Friday we talked about what things we have and what things we need. Some people in my group were on task and others were just doing what ever. I was working on the letter so we can send it out to ask for donations hopefully we can get more accomplished.

Service Learning (Past)

Last meeting I felt like we got something accomplished. We were looking up web site to donated supplies to us. We did make much progress but hopefully tomorrow we start getting the places to donate the oil and other things we need for the fundred dollar bill.

Empire of the Sun

Empire of the Sun

The two characters I am going to be talking about are Jim and Jamie. These two people are played by the same person but at different times in his life. He changes his life style to adapt to the conditions his life is put in when World War II starts and he loses everything he use to hold dear and near to him.

In the beginning of the movie Jamie is this spoiled rich kid who does and gets what ever he wants he has his whole life ahead of him. His parents are there for him and he is curious of all the surrounding around him. He has servants and he is waited on hand and foot. He doesn’t do anything for himself. His house is a mansion and he has his own room and plenty of money. He doesn’t have a care in the world.

By the end of the movie he has changed his name to Jim and has to survive in the world without his mother and father. He does find friendship in a man named Basie, but he is mostly independent and he is very strategic. He learns to trade things and he also wants to be an American, which was obviously the most powerful group in the interment camps. He forms his own family and has his own morals, which helps him to become strong during his time of need.

When the war is over he is faced with the hard decisions.
The American soldiers come and take him to an orphanage where
He sees his parents and they look exactly as they had when he had lost them in the crazy war, but he had changed entirely inside and out his own father didn’t notice him.

Theme to Of Mice of Men

What do call someone that takes a "special" person everywhere you go? You call them George. My theme for of Mice and Men is the American Dream, because in this book everyone has a dream. The three main people who had a dream were Lennie, George, Candy and Curley’s wife.

First,Curley’s wife had a big dream to be a movie star. “Went out to the riverside dance palace with him, he says he was going to put me in the movie. Soon he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me about it.” But they were playing her dream because they didn’t care about her big dream that she had. She was only women in the plot. I think she want to be with other men because she wanted something new in a life. But she could not complete this dream because she was killed by Lennie.

Second,I this book lennie had a dream. His dream was a little place. Lennie wanted to "tend rabbits". Although he had a mind of a young child he still has a dream. He wanted a big land were he and George can called their own and also a farm.He wanted a dream with George in it, I think if George was not there would have been no Lenny. But his dream cane to an end because George took his life.

Then,George, Lennie ,and Candy shared the same dream which was to live off of the “fat of the land” by getting an acre of land and a home they can call their own. George & Lennie wanted to be their own bosses. Lennie’s only dream was to tend to the rabbits. I think out of this whole book he is the only one to even get a chance to complete his dream.

In conclusion, in this book every one had a dream, but different dreams.I think Steinbeck wanted to show people how everyone has a dream of their own. People like Lennie who had the mind of a young child he had a dream. Some people’s dream is to become a movie star but other people always put your dream on line, because they said I will called you back when I come back from Hollywood. But they lie to you they all got you hop up but it never happen like Curley’s Wife. A man who put his dream on hold to take care of someone who are unable to think own this and can’t survive on his own.

Reports from Last Week Service Learning

I am in the Fundred Dollar Bills Service Learnig Group. So far we talked about the conditions in New Orleans. In the tourist areas it was no real damage but in regular neigborhoods nothing really happened. The house are still a wreck with the same signs on the buildings that counted how many died or how many were founded alive. Then we talked about how we can get people draw fundred dollar bills. This week I look forward to calling the schools to see if other art classes can draw it so we can start collecting fundred dollar bills. Or we can host a stand in some type of business that we can get anybody to draw one. Are goal is to get 1,000,000 in Fundred dollar Bills.

Chicago Article

Mr. Dalton has just build new homes in poverty areas. Some say is he really helping the poor? The homes are very affordable but the community is the worst. The neighborhoods are rat infested, and there are about 4 people in a one room apartment. Is he really helping the poor? Then mostly poor blacks live here how are they suppose to better them self in this kind of environment? So it seems he just added to the problem than solving it because the poor are still poor but the rich are getting richer. So we want to give many thanks to Mr. Dalton for keeping social classes separated than many it better for the poor. Your money is well spend.

Diamond's Cheats 4 Free!!!!!!

Chapter 6-“Finishing the Job”
Pg. 81-93

Bigger brings Mary home from a night out with her boyfriend, and she is really drunk. He took her to her room by carrying her up the steps. He asked her which room was hers because he wasn’t sure. So it was the right room but as he started to lay her on her bed they started kissing. As they were kissing her mother walk into the room. Since she was blind she couldn’t see Bigger in the room but called out for her daughter. While calling out for her daughter Mary, started to make noises so Bigger put his hand over her mouth to keep her quiet. Mary’s mother was walking towards them and smelled the alcohol on Mary and thought she was drunk. After the mother left he noticed that Mary was dead. With panic he stuff her in the suitcase and carried her downstairs to the furnace. He pushed her in but she didn’t fit so he put newspaper on the floor and cut off her head and put it in the furnace also. He also put the newspaper in the furnace to leave no evidence. He left the car in the driveway and was going to blame everything on the boyfriend when the time came around. Then he just went home because his job was done …..for today.

Finishing the job means that Bigger was finishing his job in more than way. By dropping off Mary and killing her and leaving no evidence.

Service Learning

For Service Learning I think a group one should be running for causes. We can combine the Students run Philly Style and run for cancer, AIDS, and etc, school tutoring, and visist sick children at Children's Hospital. Byt for individual I think we can do is go to daycare centers and help out there because they need a hand all the time, or go to a nursing home and help out .

National History Day Reflection

My reflection on NHD is kind of mixed feelings. I felt mad that I didn't win but I'm happy that it's over. But I would do this project every year because it help me get great information and how to tell the difference between primary and secondary sources. Plus, how to tell the difference between a great project and a bad. My project this year was the National Womens' Party and i did an exhibit board. It went grat doing the project was hard but it was fun.

Blooms Taxonomy

1.What happened after Bigger killed the rat?
-After bigger killed the rat he scared Vera until she fainted and got in trouble from their mother. She told him she wished she never had Bigger.

2.Can you write a broef outline about Bigger and Gus fights?
-Bigger kept trying to punk Gus our of robbing the store because he was scared. So he pulled out his knife and made gus lick it. Gus pleaded for Bigger to stop and ran out the store.

3.Could this have happened in 2008?
-Yes, because racism is about the same but with different characteristics. Back then blacks were scared of whites so they used to respect them out of fear, but now blacks are still scared of whites but they don't have that much respect for other races.

4. Which events could have happened if the boys robbed the store.
-If the boys weren't scared to rob the store it could of been a in and out job.

5.Why don't you devise your own way to deal with killing Mary?
-If I was Bigger and I killed Mary I would of left her in the bed after I suffocated her so it seem like she died in her sleep.

6. Judge the value of Bigger character?
-I think Bigger's character is kind of confused because he accepted being poor and blacks but he have dreams of things that don't involve being poor and black.

Geometry Project

Science Project

For my science project I am doing mealworms. My question for the project is How does vitamin E effect the metamorphosis of the mealworm to a beetle. We put a couple a grams into one of the colonies and let the others be the control. From the looks of it the vitamin E is making the transfermation go faster. They have more exoskeleton than the ones without the Vitamin E. Now i just have to write up the experiment and I'll be done.

Topic Essay

I am doing my NHD project on women during the 1920’s. My group was thinking of doing a performance. After World War I women started to gain their independent. When the men went off to war the women started to run the household. They started to get jobs and started to even have a voice in the government. With these changes their fashion started to change. They started to cut their hair to boy cuts and were wearing knee length skirts. With these changes a lot o problems arouse. Women started to go to jail if their skirt wasn’t the appropriate length. If their skirt didn’t cover their ankles then that was against the law. But our main focus is the fashion. This was a very important event in Fashion history. This showed that women had a more important role in the world.

With our performance we were going to put together a script. We were going to have a scene with the housewife, editor, beach, and we were going to think about another topic dealing with the fashion. We were going to explain how each of these groups of people was affected. We were going to also show the fashion and how much it changes in this decade. We were getting our sources from theatres and some are helping us write our scripts.

In conclusion, my history day project is Fashion in the 1920’s. We are doing a performance. We have a lot of resources and a project is going to win out of the performance group.

National History Day Project

I just change my NHD topic from fashion in the 1920s to Women Surffage. I am no longer doing a performance I'm am writing a paper. I didn't really have to find a lot of information because they kind of relate to each other. Women's fashion is related to Women Surffage because in the 1920s women was treated as slaves to their men but started to gain their indepdence, and in the 1920s women had gain their right to vote from the 19th amendment. But I know I got to narrow down my topic because it's to board.

Roger Bacon

Roger Bacon didn't really do anything in math but he was a teacher. He made the theory that there is a double way of coming to the knowledge of things, one through the experiments of science and the other through divine inspiration.

Religion in School

I think religion should be taught in school but it should be option like an extracurricular activity. A lot of people families really don't teach them religion and if they're curious they can see if they want to convert into any of the religion.
